W3Schools Online Web Tutorials the W3C has come a long way from the gibberish I first found there a couple years ago, they've also got some great reference tools, lists of HTML4 and XHTML1 tags, clicking on any of them gets you a detailed explanation of the tag and its valid attributes and uses, the list of tags also shows the earliest browser versions that support it.
