Eesh, what is this - "Pick on Florida Year" for the weather gods? If this hurricane hits them, that's what? Four hurricanes in about a month's time??? Yowza.
Then again, the sucker could continue more westerly and hit me. eek.

God, I love RAIN! I love it coming down in drenching sheets with the wind swirling and the thunder booming! (as long as the power or cable doesn't go out :))
It's soooo loverly, water soaking into the dry hot ground, smell of it blowing in my window, the sound of it on my roof (eeee... oops lights blinked for a second, second computer reboots, TV un-muted :)).
Plus my car really needed washing...

Be careful what you say
Yesterday, while helping mom supervise the moving guys, we had a few of those 30 second rains out of a clear blue sky, it's been fairly dry here for the last couple weeks and horrendously hot too but these didn't help any, they dried up within seconds. I mentioned to my mom that we needed a really good soaking rain all day long.
And lookee! Gee, if I'd know all I had to do was say it out loud, I'd have done it a week ago! It's glorious, good strong rain since about 11 am, lovely clouds to keep it cool, but not much thunder or lightning or wind just good soaking rain!
I'm in heaven!

God, it feels so much better today!
The last couple weeks here have been oppressively humid and hot, while we usually get this during the summer, May isn't usually like this, but we've had 90-95 degree weather with really high humidity which puts the "feels like" range above 100 degrees. And even at night, it's felt like it's about 80 degrees so no relief even after dark.
I am sooooo affected by the weather (and I live in the wrong state) and it's made me just a slug, don't want to go out, don't want to do anything, just too damn hot to move. And it's been really affecting my mood too, people up north get SAD in the winter, I get it in the summer but it's even worse when summer starts in May. We went from cool fronts at the beginning of May to oppressive August-like heat ten days later and it's been awful.
Last night about 1 am, the wind started blowing, the breeze was a bit cooler and felt really good. And then -- just about 2 am, as I was going to bed, it started to rain! I had gone outside to see how much cooler it was (the temp had dropped about ten degrees) and as I was standing there, I could hear the rain start to fall and feel a drop here and there and it started raining more and more. I left the windows open in the living room so it would cool off overnight and god is it wonderful today! Cool, about 70ish, much lower humidity and just really really nice.
And I have this huge smile on my face! And I WANT to go out and do stuff, lordy, it's so WONDERFUL!

Storming, part 2
About two minutes after I posted that last entry, the power went out! Stayed off for about an hour and a half, I took a shower and got dressed and went out cause it was too hot and sticky to stay in the house with no A/C.
Now the power's back on, I've reset all my VCRs, need to set my alarm clock before I go to bed and the microwave clock too but it's nice and cool for the most part now since it's still somewhat cloudy and the drenching rain cooled things off.
Flooded the yard tho and the lawn guy was supposed to cut it tomorrow, I'm not sure if it'll dry out enough for that...but it was really dry here so the rain was good!
Holy cow! Hellacious lightning and thunder here! Huge crack right next to my house, the TV blinked for a moment but the power's still on...
I like storms, although I'd prefer the lightning stayed a little further away so it doesn't take out a transformer. But the rain is really nice, we needed it badly and this is a good drenching that's brought the temperature down at least ten degrees so I've got all the windows open!

Nagging Annoyances, Part 3
Okay, maybe the weird A/C thing was just a power surge caused by the approaching storm, since I've gotten two blips in the power in 30 minutes, I've shut down the other computer since its UPS apparently died awhile back and I can hear the wind and rain coming, we also apparently have a tornado watch out (but I'm in the middle of the city, pretty safe here) so it's a heck of a storm but it's blowing in cooler weather, thank god.
Katie's freaked out and gone to hide in the bedroom, Sam's outside, probably stuck under the neighbor's house and doesn't want to get wet running home, god the breeze coming in the window is just wonderful! So lovely and cool and fresh! ooh, I think I hear a bit of hail hitting the windows, wow, this is a winter storm!

Well, now it's four hours later, it's 42 degrees and my fingers are numb and my toes are freezing! But I still love cold weather, I think I'll just take a hot shower and then I'll be fine! :)
One advantage is that the glass of coke I got four hours ago without any ice is still just as cold....

I adore cold weather! It's 40 degrees right now, I have the window open (so the cats can go in and out) and I'm sitting here on the couch as comfortable as can be! Tonight we have a chance of a freeze, supposed to in the 50's and 60's for the next few days and then another cold front comes thru! It's wonderful!

It's a glorious day!
In spite of various problems and hassles last night and this morning, the cat starting to barf on the bed in the middle of the night (nothing else wakes one up quite so quickly as that! and it's amazing how fast my leg comes out to boot said cat off the bed :)), the slight headache I've got, the hassles with Mozilla Mail (love the browser, not so fond of the mail part), DNS problems with Yahoogroups on a domain for someone I host, it's really quite a gorgeous day. Sunny but nice and windy! I love wind almost as much as rain and I love the sound of it in the trees outside my open window. The cats are sleeping peacefully around me and it's about 70 degrees, not cold, not hot, just right!

Two very frustrating days of trying to get net access, seven hours of frustration on Friday and another five hours yesterday, all during the afternoon/evening time when I'm usually working on websites and have to have net access to upload changes, view pages, test uploading and searching on the archives, plus I was trying to do the weekly backups of the websites. Arrrgggghhhh!
It's been loverly cool tho, plus rain, really nice days although my cats would disagree, Garfield described it perfectly:
I have such wimpy cats! They spent yesterday all cuddled up to me, demanding that I put the big down comforter over me so they could lay next to me and really wanting me to turn on the space heater and point it straight at them.

It's raining, it's pouring, the old man is snoring
I talk about the weather alot. Weather is a big deal for me, I guess, partly cause I hate it so much about 6 months out of the year here and so I'm so happy when it finally gets liveable again.
This week, it's raining! Lovely, soothing, wet, cool, rain. A little thunder here and there but not much so it's not disrupting the electricity, mainly just rain and it's cooler and gray skies keeping the sun out. I like gray, the times I've gone to England have all been in October, November or March. The trips in October and March were actually unseasonably warm and sunny when I really wanted the damp and gray skies that England is so famous for.
It's been raining since Sunday and the weatherman promises more all week long, so I'm happy! And it's not the rain all day, it's just rain for an hour, then stop for a bit, then rain some more, then stop and so there's time in there to run outside and do an errand or whatever. I've got all the windows open and the shades pulled up and I'm sitting here enjoying the cool breeze, the smell of water on the air and the sound of raindrops sweeping across the lawn.
And damn, MT really needs a spell check, I type too fast and don't always proofread that well.

Shhhhhh! There's supposed to be a cold front coming thru this weekend and getting temps down to the 70's during the day and 50's at night and I don't want to jinx it!
I love fall, I love winter, I love cold weather, I live for this time of year. I made it thru the whole summer and it never seemed that hot, the A/C never conked out, it was hot but not unbearable and then suddenly at the beginning of September, it struck, the icky hot sticky stuff we normally get from July to October, it struck with a vengeance. It's been not just hot but sticky, even when the temp was only 90, my A/C was conking out from the humidity. Ickickickick....
So I live for this time of year and the first really good cold front to blow thru. There was this tiny one for two days in the middle of the month, just to show us how bad it was the rest of the month but this one is supposed to be better, colder and temps even after it's gone will be cooler.

While everything is now fixed at the webhost (thank god!), all that stress got my back all tense again and I have to help my brother move tomorrow. And we apparently aren't going to get a speck of rain from that hurricane, dang it, my yard and plants really need it. I've managed to avoid watering all summer, every time it got really dry, some rain would come along just in the nick of time but it looks like I'm going to have to give in and drag out the hoses and sprinklers after all.

Stacks and stacks of tapes
As you might have guessed by my last entry, I've been lost in TV land this week, watching the premieres of new and old shows all week! After the long rerun hell of summer with only two new shows, one fabulous (The Wire) and one a dud (Witchblade), I finally have a lovely stack of tapes with all sorts of new stuff sitting next to my vcr waiting for me to watch them. I love fall!
And it is fall, finally, really, amazingly, it's actually cooler here in September for once, temps in the 80's instead of 90's like most years or 100's like we had two years ago. I've got my windows open and the A/C turned off and it's wonderful!
My aunt wrote this:
This morning I realised FALL IS COMING. There was that SNAP to the air this morning. October country will soon be here.
For some people, it's the closing of the year.......for me it doesn't feel like that. It's an END to the oppressive jungle funk of summer....of baked dry creek beds........mosquito and tick and chigger bites. It's the OVEN heat inside a parked car. It's the unending BUZZZZZZZ of the cicadas. The itch......the sweat......the MELT of summertime, when the "livin' is easy"......ONLY for catfish.
The leaves are starting to turn to cool flame in the woods.....the sky is achingly blue and clear and the mornings are downright CRISP. There's the hazy dewfrost on the grass in the morning. There's the smell of woodsmoke on the evening air.....and the eyeblinking brightness of dappled light in the woods. There's the snort and rustle of surprised deer.
The smell of fresh pumpkin pie and roasted turkey and the mouth-watering fragrance of sage cornbread stuffing.....the hot buttery aroma of turkey gravy. The clink and whisper of silverware and table linen and special glasses as the table is set in the dining room. The distant roar of football games on tv.......the hiss and crackle of burning wood in the fireplace.
Fall is coming.
She lives in the country just a bit further north than me so she does have deer wandering around her house in the mornings and the trees do turn colorful but it's all the same things to me, she's 12 years older than me but we have most all the same reference points, the 60's, rock and roll, being liberals and all those Thanksgiving dinners together when I was a kid.
Fall has always been my most favorite time of year, I did hate the summers with my cousins up in Wisconsin coming to an end, especially when I got a big crush on one of the boys across the lake but especially since I got out of school and started working and don't have those three month vacations up there anymore, I love the fall. I love winter too, I love the cold and the steely gray skies and bringing out winter coats and sweaters. I love walking in it, feeling the cold on my cheeks, the chilly wind thru my hair and turning my ears to icicles. And dragging out the big thick quilt for the bed and the cats sleeping next to me, one on each side, pinning me to the bed and slipping reluctantly out in the morning to jump in a hot shower.
My favorite time of year!

I like the music on the Weather Channel, nice upbeat bouncy stuff while they're showing the local and regional forecasts. And holy cow, she's pregnant! I guess Junior is bigger than she expected when she bought her expecting clothes. :)

But not really...
But not really, it's just dribs and drabs, barely rain here although they keep showing all these pics of rain drenching Galveston but it's not here yet. It's really quite funny, they keep showing this radar weather map with all this GREEN right where I live but there's NO rain here! Of course, after all my whining, it'll probably flood here tomorrow and I didn't go to the grocery store and I really need milk....
And dammit! I keep forgetting to change the channel at 10pm to watch Third Watch and I end up halfway thru the news and realized I've missed the first 15 or 30 minutes so now I have to wait and get the tape when it's done! And Monday and Tuesday next week is reruns, you can bet that I will remember those nights only to remember that it's 4th season eps I've already seen three times. Dammit.

It don't rain in California...
It don't rain in California... And what's that other song? ..."and I wish it would rain", some mournful thing, I think, crying in your beer song. I'm not sad, I just want it to rain! All week, the weather forecast has been promising rain and we've had nary a drop! And now we have this big ole tropical storm right off the coast, threatening to grow up and be a hurricane and we STILL have no rain! My poor daisies are all wilted.
But the storm has at least brought us lovely cool, *fall* weather, all these wonderful southern winds which blow straight in my living room window. A little too humid but not too bad and since it's cooler, it's not bothersome. Now if that durned storm would just come a bit closer and give us some rain, not a lot, not like last summer, just a nice soft drenching.
I love rain and gray skies, I love thunder and lightning (as long as everything's unplugged or on a UPS). When I was a kid spending summers in Wisconsin at my grandparent's lake house, we used to get these marvelous northern thunder storms, they'd sweep in across the lake, cold air blowing and then torrents of rain and lightning bolts over the lake while the thunder boomed! The gods going bowling in the heavens, it was brilliantly terrifying and beautiful.
